View of Taal volcano from Balay sa Taal villaBalay sa Taal, with its breathtaking vista of the Taal Volcano and Taal Lake offers individuals and groups the chance to rejuvenate, recharge, and get away from the rat race in nearby Metro Manila.

A little more than two hours away from Manila, Balay sa Taal is easily accessible via any of popular routes going to Tagaytay. Travelers and weekenders will be pleasantly surprised to find out that Balay sa Taal is merely a stone’s throw away from the bustling Tagaytay ‘rotonda.’

Batanes Islands Paradise of The North

March 28th, 2007 by Gerry D

Ivatan stone houses in Sabtang Island, BatanesIf you’ve been to Batanes Islands, at the northern tip of the Philippines, then you know why it’s called a paradise. Where time seems to take a halt and the people were born from some ancient culture at an era when simplicity and trust is the ultimate virtue.

I went there in 2002, at that time tourism in Batanes was only for the adventurous with cash to spare due to the inaccessibility of the province to many airlines and ferrys. Mainly because the weather is trecherous, Batanes is almost always the destination of devastating storms that hit this side of the pacific.

Gawad Kalinga provide educational programs for kids In an ethereal world of poverty, lack of governance for education and health, and intangible projects for the community, there is one private sector that delivers a most surprising contribution to what this country needs — the spirit of Filipino bayanihan. A name most is already familiar with – Gawad Kalinga, or as its English name suggests, “to give care,” and that is precisely what it is doing.

Gawad Kalinga gathers volunteers to help implement its livelihood programs. The organization first held its ground as a pilot project in Bagong Silang, Kalookan City, the biggest relocation site in the country, with a youth program back in December 1995…

March 12th, 2007 by Gerry D

Sunflowers are found at the PMA groundsThe Philippine Military Academy found a home in Baguio City, where flower power is at bloom and no PMA student could ever think of wars and destructions in such a restful place.

Aside from tanks, helicopters, and military planes, the whole camp is abundant with hundreds of flower species. In fact, it has more fresh flowers in natural setting than in the Baguio City proper.

The PMA has been the center of hot news issues, especially in times of rebellion within the Philippine military ranks…

Matinloc Island in El Nido: Mystery and Beauty in Northern Palawan

March 12th, 2007 by Jodelen Ortiz

By Jodelen O. Ortiz

The heart-shaped Matinloc Island, El Nido PalawanThe scorching heat of the sun is no match to the overwhelming pleasure of experiencing the creatures of the waters. On my way to the heart-shaped island of Matinloc in El Nido, Palawan I become more and more a poet understanding the language even of the fishes – and yes, the cliffs.

Tranquility could be found even while in motion, aboard an eight-sitter banca, this I have proven in my countless trips to Matinloc. More often do the travelers keep silent while adoring the beauty of the deep-to-aqua-blue waters, the colorful fishes in different sizes and kinds, the Paleolithic-old limestone cliffs and the white-sand islands forming their own unique shapes.
