Of Eagles, Pomelo, and Beaches — Davao Holiday Tales

Paradise Island Resort in Samal Island DavaoGoing to Davao City was quite a special summer trip. Mainly because this was the very first time I set foot to the Land of Promise that is Mindanao. I immediately caught that pungent odor of Durian the minute I stepped out of the plane, and it followed me the whole time I was on vacation.

Although I did not find it to be very offensive. A local farmer told us two days later that they have found a way to grow hybrid durian fruit that isn’t as hard to breathe in as it should be, which I thought was really cool. Ang galing talaga ng Pinoy!

Good Friday Crucifixion in the Philippines is part of annual panata (sacrifice)A gruesome Good Friday made me realize how important life was and how people do unusual acts just to prove they were worthy of God’s grace. Cutud, San Fernando, Pampanga was our destination towards an enlightenment of our hearts and a purification of our minds last Lenten season. I’m ready to face what I am about to see, but still a bit nervous on how frightening and horrific it would be — a real-life cricifixion.

Victor showed no fear while he was smoking a cigarette, and waiting in line for his turn on the cross. He just happily chatted with some of the townsmen in his Kapampangan dialect. When asked by Pilipinas.ph regarding what he felt before being crucified, he said that he felt an ordinary day will just pass.

The Pamulaklakin jungle trail in Subic Subic, in the heart of Olongapo City, is popularly known for its grandiose mercantile establishments like the Royale Subic, its tourists destinations like the vast cavern of wild animals in Zoobic and of course, its sometimes adorable and pesky monkeys that dart out from behind trees to climb telephone poles and wires overhead.

What used to be a naval base for both the American and Spanish colonies now has become a haven for luscious commercial and industrial complex for both foreign and local nationalities. But the sights and sounds of Subic go beyond that.

Many Hong Kong Disneyland characters are played by FilipinosHong Kong provides a different world for the Pinoy spirit. Yet, there are many Filipinos working in this former British colony and I saw and heard them converse in Tagalog with fellow kababayans in the street, mall and public transport system there. Hong Kong is one of the territories captured by a substantial number of Filipino workers and tourists. A Filipino would not miss the Philippines in Hong Kong…

As we boarded our tourist bus bound for the magical world of Disneyland, our tourist guide asked us from what country we came from. When we replied that we are from the Philippines, the guide told us that some performers and even Disney characters are Filipinos. The Filipino penchant for the Disney stories bore fruit in the performing arts.

Tagaytay: A Picturesque City

Banca Boat at Taal LakeI’ve been all over the Philippines. I especially love those places where the weather is crisp and cold. And Tagaytay City tops my list as a favorite destination. Considered as the second summer capital of the country, because of its cold weather all year round, Tagaytay is an hour and a half drive south of Metro Manila and boasts a major tourist attraction, the Taal Volcano and Taal Lake.

Upon entering the city, you will be welcomed by fruit vendors on both side of the streets. You can buy all the fruits in season here at a very affordable price. All-time favorite is pineapple and banana. As you drive along, you can already see the view of Taal Volcano and Taal lake. A few years back, Tagaytay is not very commercialized. Today, you can find restaurants and hotels in every corner that offers a view of the world famous volcano.

Puerto Princesa Underground RiverIf Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system in the world, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is the longest in the Philippines. Proclamation No. 835 on March 26, 1971 gave the cave its name as it is known today, but it was previously called Saint Paul Underground River.

It forms part of the lush and limestone-filled Mount Saint Paul. The navigable 8.2 kilometers of cave system was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999. No wonder it is one of the major tourist destinations in the City of Puerto Princesa with an annual income of about five million pesos (Php5,000,000.00) every year.
